The Artist:

Monica Tovar

“I paint so I don’t forget my childlike enthusiasm for life and fairy tales.”

“Poseidon in Modern Times” Graphite on paper, 28x32' inches. 2022, Preselected in Artfields Competition 2023.

Life in Black and White

“I like the honesty of black and white. It lets the light breathe and puts the focus on emotion.”

Beginnings

“I was too young to remember when I first started liking to draw, and I don’t remember life before someone called me a “little artist.” My dad was a musician and my first real artist friend. He passed away when I was six, and after that, I think I began drawing in a way that felt more real—sometimes dark, sometimes light. My classmates loved my drawings, which helped me make real, lasting friendships. Now, I’m grateful to be able to keep doing what I love and to help kids improve their skills and express themselves through art.”

“Princess of War” Graphite on paper 8.5x11 inches.
